Between the holidays, travel, and end of Q4 stress, we can quickly experience burnout, insomnia, and have difficulty connecting to ourselves to truly enjoy the blessings and symbolic nature of this time of year.
Yoga Nidra, derived from an ancient Tantra practice, is a simple and efficient way to let go of racing thoughts and deeply relax while remaining conscious to reduce anxiety, stress, and insomnia. It is a kind of mediation performed lying down in savasana and is suitable for all ages and abilities.
We begin our hour-long experience with some aromatherapy, light breathing exercises (pranayama), and a gentle, restorative yoga series to connect to and open the body in preparation for Yoga Nidra. During the practice, the parasympathetic nervous system (“rest / digest” phase, opposite of “fight / flight") is activated, and we enter the hypnogogic state between being awake and being asleep. When we stay in this place for 20 minutes it is the equivalent of 4 hours of sleep. We seal the experience with a sankalpa (intention-setting) practice to close the session, carrying the message our heart and soul reveals to us after quieting the mind.
