Running the NYC Marathon – A Panel Session

The NYC Marathon is fast approaching!!! Are you excited, because we are!!!

Will this be your 1st NYC Marathon? Are you a seasoned marathoner looking to maybe discover a new tip to help on race day? Or maybe you’re just thinking about running a marathon someday and want to hear from some runners that have done it!

If any of these are true, come join us for a 1-hour discussion on what it’s like on race day of the NYC Marathon! The Most Informal Running Club Ever (“TMIRCE”) hosted by HUB seventeen is excited to bring you our second installment of Real Talk from Real Runners.

Can you relate to some elite runner that posts a 2-hour time? We can’t… So we’re bringing in 3, 4, 5 & 6-hour marathoners to discuss their experiences and share insights to assist you on race day.

Our panel of experienced NYC Marathon Finishers trained for months just like you and ran among the 50,000+ participants just like you will on November 4th. We’ll discuss a range of topics including what to do with your time pre-race in the athlete’s village in Staten Island, what to expect at the start line, managing your nutrition along the way and how best to locate your friends and family on the course.

Our panelists will help you navigate your way around the 5 boroughs of NYC right through the finish line.

Women's Self Defense Class

Women's Self Defense Class

I got a call one day no one wants to get. My best friend had been mugged on the street close to her apartment. Thankfully, she was not harmed, but she was very shook up. I went to look up some self defense classes as a way for me to be able to support her as she healed. To my surprise, all of the self defense classes I found are taught by men in martial arts studios - not the best environment for someone who has been through a traumatic experience.

I knew I needed to create a class that was in a safe environment for women to come together to learn self defense and personal safety in a supportive, compassiante community. I reached out to Self Defense and Personal Safety expert Dawn Nadeau and she is donating her time to teach this class for us. In the class we will learn some very pratical and actionable advice and moves to feel more safe in this sometimes crazy and dangerous city.

What to expect:

In a 60 minute session, we will begin to unpack this loaded topic with a combination of specific tips & techniques, concepts, and a new way to think about your personal safety in an on-going, but not anxiety-producing way. Using physical examples and group discussion and activities, we will address a number of specific scenarios.

Avoidance & Awareness: This is the cardinal rule of personal safety, yet what does that really mean and how can you put it into action in your daily life?

Tools of Defense: We all carry tools around with us every day we can use to keep ourselves safe. What are they and how can we use them?

The Silent Scream Understanding the link between mind and body and what happens in tense situations is a critical element of staying safe.

Let’s Get Physical No one can learn to become a master of self defense in one session, but learning a few simple techniques can change your perception of your ability to defend yourself.

Incorporating good personal safety habits into our lives is much like fitness or healthy eating: it’s easy to become lax, yet the benefits of creating good habits will last a lifetime and, in this case, may just save your life.

***To ensure a safe space, this class is reserved only for those who identify as a woman.***

Sayfty: Resources & Tools for Sexual Assault Survivors and Allies

Sayfty: Resources & Tools for Sexual Assault Survivors and Allies

According to the World Health Organization, 1/3 women experience some form of physical or sexual violence, from a male partner during the course of their lifetime. Further lack of family and community support, economic independence and limited access to justice make the survivor more vulnerable.

A survivor of violence often starts his/her journey by seeking help through a specific organization or women’s protection center. What ensues thereafter largely depends on the people and support institutions involved in each step of the way. Survivors need an effective support system that can provide a comprehensive set of services ranging from medical care to safe accommodation, counseling, legal advice, police protection and economic empowerment.

Goals of the event
This event will allow people of all genders to come together to share survivor stories, tools, resources and advocacy efforts for survivors and allies. The event will constitute a space for all to frankly and safely discuss the challenges they face as survivors and allies. The tools and resources shared during the event will be with the goal to heal and empower survivors and allies.

  1. To provide a safe space for survivor and allies to come together and share stories
  2. To Empower survivors and allies with the right tools and resources for healing
  3. To support a preventive measure like self-defense workshops for girls in India

This is a ticketed event. 100% of the proceeds will be used by Sayfty to organize self-defense workshops for girls in India. Sayfty organized self-defense workshops for young women and girls in over 16 countries last year empowering more thank 800 young women.

Yoga for the Wounded Heart Workshop

The practice of yoga can serve as a powerful tool for helping us heal some of our deepest heartbreaks. Our emotional wounds can profoundly affect our daily lives, as well as our ability to forge connections with others and experience genuine freedom.

The tradition of yoga offers both a philosophical perspective as well as a practical path towards presence, and hence towards healing that which keeps us from presence.

Join philosopher, yoga instructor, and award-winning writer Tatiana Forero Puerta in this two-hour workshop based on her book, Yoga for the Wounded Heart: A Philosophy, Practice, and Journey of Healing Emotional Pain (Lantern Books, 2018). This workshop will utilize the physical practice of asana, as well as lecture, group work, self-reflection, and meditation techniques to not only dive deeper into what is available on the yogic path but also explore a practical application to the yogic tools of healing our precious hearts.

No previous experience with yoga necessary; just the curiosity to go within.
